Historic Gardens and Fort Anne in Annapolis Royal
The Historic Gardens are a unique regional treasure. Set on a riverside slope in the heart of this historic town, the Gardens incorporate an area diked by the original Acadian settlers in the 17th century. These Gardens were developed in the 1970s and include several themed areas, including a rose collection with over 230 cultivars.
Fort Anne was a prize over which the British and French fought throughout the 17th and
18th centuries. It was first fortified in 1629 when the Scots arrived in Nova Scotia. The site has been the seat of government for Acadie (the French province) and for all of Nova Scotia from 1713-1749 under British rule, until Halifax was founded as the new capital.
Your voyage of discovery will commence with a scenic drive along the Annapolis Basin. The first stop will be the Historic Gardens where small groups will be guided on tours, or you can make your own way along the many paths and diked areas. There will be an inclusive refreshment break at the German Bakery, and an opportunity to learn about apple cultivation, for which the Annapolis Valley is famous.
After the short drive to Fort Anne, you will visit the fortifications and the 1797 officers’ quarters, which contain a unique heritage tapestry and a collection of artefacts from the region. As Fort Anne is in the centre of Annapolis Royal, you will have the opportunity to stroll through the centuries within the town, which contains eclectic shops and cafes, before you return to Digby.
