The Acadian (French) Shore – Churches, Culture and Cuisine

A forty five minute scenic drive along this picturesque and colourful coastline takes you to the atmospheric village of Meteghan. Begin the day with a visit to a local gallery, June Chez ChristopheDeveau Galerie Studio, and then discover St. Alphonse Church, where there is a replica of the grotto of Lourdes. At Smugglers’ Cove Provincial Park you will enjoy an unparalleled view of St. Mary’s Bay, while learning a bit of about the history of contraband and rum running during the Prohibition era.

The southwest shore of Nova Scotia is renowned for its French Acadian heritage and unique fishing villages. You are sure to enjoy a memorable lunch featuring live Acadian music at Restaurant Chez Christophe. The menu will feature salad followed by authentic seafood (lobster, scallop and shrimp) lasagna with dessert, tea and coffee. Following lunch, you will visit two remarkable churches. St. Mary’s parish church (Eglise Sainte-Marie), St-Bernardunquestionably North America’s largest wooden building, was constructed to handle the burgeoning number of devout Roman Catholic parishioners in 1905. Next is St. Bernard, the largest church along the French shore and one of the largest in eastern Canada.

Upon returning to Digby you will have time to stroll, visit and shop for souvenirs before returning to the Balmoral. NB: We will offer a vegetarian meal as well as an alternative for those with seafood allergies. Please advise when booking this excursion.
